Sodium Thiosulfate is an antidote for cyanide poisoning. In the presence of rhodanese, it can combine with free or cyanide-bound methemoglobin in the body to form non-toxic thiocyanate, which is then excreted in urine, thus detoxifying cyanide poisoning. Additionally, it can bind with various metal ions to form non-toxic sulfides that are excreted in urine, and it also has a desensitizing effect. In clinical practice, it is used for cyanide and nitrile poisoning, as well as the treatment of arsenic, bismuth, iodine, mercury, lead poisoning, and conditions such as skin itching, chronic dermatitis, chronic urticaria, drug rash, scabies, and ringworm. This medication is not suitable for oral administration. After intravenous injection, it quickly distributes into the extracellular fluid of various tissues, with a half-life of 0.65 hours, and most of it is excreted unchanged in urine. For the treatment of cyanide poisoning, a slow intravenous infusion of 12.5-25 grams is commonly used. For metal poisoning or desensitization treatment, the dosage is 0.5-1 gram per administration, administered by intravenous injection.
Other uses:
    Mainly used as a fixing agent in the photography industry.
    Secondary applications include as a reducing agent for chromium salts during tanning of leather, neutralizing agent for nitrogen-containing exhaust gases, mordant, bleaching agent for straw and hair, and a dechlorinating agent in pulp bleaching.
    It is also used in the production of tetraethyllead, dye intermediates, and silver extraction from ores.
