PRODUCT APPLICATION

Sodium metasilicate is a salt of silicic acid and belongs to the category of inorganic salt products. Its molecular formula is Na2SiO3·nH2O. It is a non-toxic, odorless, and environmentally friendly white powder or crystalline granules. It is soluble in water but insoluble in alcohol and acids. Its aqueous solution is alkaline. It is hygroscopic and deliquescent in the presence of air. It has descaling, emulsifying, dispersing, wetting, penetrating properties, and the ability to buffer pH. It is classified by the state as one of the "fine chemicals to be prioritized for development in China" and one of the "key products for future development of the inorganic chemical industry in China." Sodium metasilicate is a low-molecular-weight crystal obtained from the reaction of soda ash and Caustic Soda solution under heat. It is available as anhydrous, pentahydrate, and nonahydrate compounds. Among them, only the nonahydrate compound exists in the Chinese market. It was developed in the 1980s as an emergency product with lower technical content due to the urgent need for sodium metasilicate. However, it is gradually being phased out because it has a melting point of only 42°C and releases crystallization water at 30-40°C, which causes inconvenience during use. It easily turns into a liquid or paste during storage. Nevertheless, due to some user habits and certain fields not being particularly concerned about crystallization water, nonahydrate sodium metasilicate still has a certain market.

In terms of inorganic electrolytes, sodium metasilicate has the highest alkalinity and pH buffering capacity. It has strong wetting, emulsifying, and saponifying effects on oils and fats. It exhibits excellent performance in removal, dispersion, and suspension of dirt, and prevents the redeposition of dirt. It has strong cleansing power and significant buffering capacity. It can neutralize acidic substances, emulsify fats and oils, exhibit anti-redeposition effects on inorganic substances, and provide corrosion protection for metals. It can be used as a substitute for Sodium Tripolyphosphate in the production of highly efficient detergents and metal cleaning agents, thereby reducing the environmental pollution caused by sodium tripolyphosphate. The application of sodium metasilicate in detergents has a history of over 40 years in foreign countries and over 20 years in China. The application technology is relatively mature. It is a mature chemical product with a mature and broad market. Sodium metasilicate has extensive applications in industries such as detergents, ceramics, electroplating, textiles, printing and dyeing, papermaking, cement, concrete, refractory materials, oil and fat processing, and leather processing.
