Product Description

Benzyl chloride, also known as benzyl chloride or benzyl chloride, is a colorless liquid with a strong irritating odor. It is soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform, ethanol, and ether, but insoluble in water. Its vapor has a certain irritant effect on the mucous membranes of the eyes and is a strong lacrimator. Benzyl chloride is widely used as an intermediate in the synthesis of dyes, pesticides, synthetic fragrances, detergents, plasticizers, and pharmaceuticals.

PRODUCT APPLICATION

Benzyl chloride is an important organic intermediate. It is a colorless or pale yellow transparent liquid with a pungent odor and strong corrosiveness. It is soluble in organic solvents such as ether, chloroform, and chlorobenzene. Benzyl chloride has a wide range of industrial applications, particularly in the fields of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, dye additives, and synthetic agents, for the production of products such as benzaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, aniline, octamethylphosphoramide, benzylpenicillin, benzyl alcohol, benzyl cyanide, and Benzoic Acid.
Benzyl chloride belongs to the class of benzyl halides, which are irritant compounds. In the field of pesticides, it can be directly used to synthesize organophosphorus fungicides such as tricyclazole and isoprothiolane, as well as serve as an important raw material for many other intermediates, such as benzyl cyanide, benzoyl chloride, and m-bromobenzyl aldehyde. In addition, benzyl chloride finds extensive applications in the fields of pharmaceuticals, fragrances, dye additives, and synthetic resins. It is an important intermediate in chemical and pharmaceutical production.
Benzyl chloride itself is tear-inducing, highly toxic, and considered a carcinogenic substance. It also possesses environmental persistence. Due to its wide usage and significant quantities involved, leaks during transportation or direct disposal of waste liquid or waste containing benzyl chloride by production companies can lead to its direct entry into the soil, eventually causing soil pollution.
Benzyl chloride is used in a coupling reaction to prepare 1,2-diphenylethane:
In a 1000 ml reaction flask, add 400 g of water and 180 g of iron powder. Start stirring and slowly add 100 g of hydrochloric acid solution containing 10 g of cuprous chloride with a mass fraction of 0.1%. After 10 minutes, add 500 g of benzyl chloride. Heat and raise the temperature, maintaining the temperature of the materials in the reaction flask at 80-85°C and stirring for 3 hours. Insulate and let it stand for 30 minutes, then separate the unreacted iron powder, the pale green ferrous chloride aqueous solution, and the crude product of 1,2-diphenylethane.
Afterward, add 280 g of water to the crude product of 1,2-diphenylethane, maintain the temperature of the materials in the reaction flask at 60-85°C, stir and wash for 10 minutes, insulate and let it stand for 1 hour, and separate the washing water. Repeat the water washing step for the crude product of 1,2-diphenylethane 1-2 times. Then, add 200 g of ethanol with a mass fraction of 95% to the crude product of 1,2-diphenylethane, maintain the temperature of the materials in the reaction flask at 60-85°C, stir and wash for 10 minutes, and naturally cool down. The needle-shaped crystals of 1,2-diphenylethane will precipitate. Filter the mixture and transfer the filter cake to a vacuum drying oven. Dry it at a pressure of 0.085-0.09 MPa and a temperature of 30-35°C for 3 hours to obtain 334.6 g of white needle-shaped 1,2-diphenylethane product with a yield of 93.0% and a melting point of 51.3°C.
