Sodium citrate, also known as Citric Acid sodium salt or trisodium citrate, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H5Na3O7. It is soluble in water and glycerol, sparingly soluble in ethanol. Aqueous solutions of sodium citrate exhibit slight alkalinity. It is commonly used as a buffering agent, chelating agent, and in bacterial culture media. In medicine, it is used as a diuretic, expectorant, diaphoretic, and anticoagulant. Sodium citrate is also utilized in various applications such as food and beverages, electroplating, and photography.

PRODUCT APPLICATION

Sodium citrate, with its various excellent properties mentioned above, has a wide range of applications.
Food Additive:Acid Agent
Sodium citrate is non-toxic and possesses pH-regulating properties and good stability, making it suitable for the food industry. It is extensively used as a food additive, particularly as a flavor enhancer, buffering agent, emulsifier, leavening agent, and stabilizer. In addition, when combined with citric acid, sodium citrate serves as a flavoring agent, gelling agent, and nutritional supplement in various products such as jams, jellies, juices, beverages, dairy products, and pastries.
Pharmaceutical Industry: Sodium citrate has been developed as a long-acting anticoagulant since 1914, allowing blood to be preserved for a longer duration. In 1915, Richard Lewisohn demonstrated the use of sodium citrate as an anticoagulant at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, which eventually led to the establishment of blood banking systems we use today, where transfusions no longer require donors and recipients to be present at the same time and location. Sodium citrate also exhibits preservative properties and is used for the preservation of certain medications.
Construction Industry: In the construction industry, sodium citrate can be added as a retarding agent in concrete production, improving the freeze resistance, compressive strength, and tensile strength of cement products. In the current context of increasing environmental concerns, research has shown that the utilization of sodium citrate's own characteristics can effectively remove sulfides from industrial exhaust gases.
Electroplating and Manufacturing Industry: Due to its excellent chelating properties, sodium citrate finds applications in the electroplating industry. Neutral nickel plating with citrate salts has gained popularity due to its environmental friendliness, lack of pollution, ease of maintenance, low corrosion, and superior coating performance. Sodium citrate is also used in the manufacturing of nanomaterials and employed as a grinding aid and whitening agent in the ceramics industry.
Industrial Cleaning: The widespread use of trisodium phosphate in the detergent industry leads to high phosphate levels in wastewater, causing eutrophication and rapid growth of algae, which depletes oxygen and harms aquatic life. To address this environmental issue, countries have already regulated the phosphate content in detergents since the 1970s. Sodium citrate, when added to detergents, enhances the cleaning performance. Consequently, sodium citrate is extensively used in the production of phosphate-free laundry powders and liquid detergents. Research has also shown that dedicated cleaning agents containing sodium citrate are non-corrosive, making them suitable for cleaning delicate instruments. Moreover, specialized cleaning agents containing sodium citrate have been developed for the removal of pesticide residues from vegetables and fruits, as food safety is becoming an increasing concern. As research progresses, the applications of sodium citrate continue to expand.
