Sodium hydroxide, also known as Caustic Soda or lye, is a highly corrosive strong base. It is typically in the form of white flakes or granules. It is soluble in water, producing an alkaline solution, and it can also dissolve in methanol and ethanol.

Sodium hydroxide has a wide range of applications. Water Treatment:Cleaning Agent In chemical experiments, apart from being used as a reagent, it is also used as an alkaline drying agent due to its strong hygroscopic properties. Caustic soda has extensive applications in the national economy, and many industries require it. The largest sector utilizing caustic soda is the manufacturing of chemical pharmaceuticals, followed by papermaking, aluminum refining, tungsten refining, synthetic silk and cotton, and soap manufacturing. Additionally, a significant amount of caustic soda is used in the production of dyes, plastics, pharmaceuticals, and organic intermediates, recycling of used rubber, sodium metal production, electrolysis of water, inorganic salt production, as well as the production of borax, chromium salts, manganese salts, and phosphates. Industrial-grade sodium hydroxide should meet the national standard GB 209-2006; industrial ion exchange membrane method sodium hydroxide should comply with the national standard GB/T 11199-89; sodium hydroxide for chemical fiber should meet the national standard GB 11212-89; and edible sodium hydroxide should meet the national standard GB 5175-85.
In industry, sodium hydroxide is commonly referred to as caustic soda, or it may be called lye or caustic soda. This is because when concentrated sodium hydroxide solution splashes onto the skin, it can corrode the epidermis and cause burns. It has a dissolving effect on proteins, and it is highly irritating and corrosive (compared to acid burns, alkaline burns are more difficult to heal due to their protein-dissolving effect). Instilling a 0.02% solution into a rabbit's eye can cause corneal epithelial damage. The LD50 for intraperitoneal injection in mice is 40 mg/kg, and the LDLo for oral administration in rabbits is 500 mg/kg. Sodium hydroxide dust can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract and corrode the nasal septum. When it splashes onto the skin, especially on mucous membranes, it can form soft scabs and penetrate deep tissues, leaving scars after burns. If it splashes into the eyes, it not only damages the cornea but also can cause damage to deep eye tissues, and in severe cases, it can lead to blindness. Ingestion can cause gastrointestinal burns, abdominal pain, mucosal erosion, bloody emesis, bloody diarrhea, and sometimes hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, shock, gastrointestinal perforation, and later stages may result in gastrointestinal stenosis. Due to its strong alkalinity, it can cause water pollution and caution should be exercised regarding plants and aquatic organisms.
