Potassium Hydroxide KOH Liquid 48%

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Potassium Hydroxide 48%(Tech Grade)

1310-58-3 KOH

Potassium Hydroxide is a colorless solid and a typical strong base. It has many industrial and commercial uses, most of which rely on its corrosive nature and reactive properties with acids. It is estimated that 700,000 to 800,000 tons were produced in 2005. The production of sodium hydroxide is approximately 100 times that of potassium hydroxide each year. Potassium hydroxide is widely regarded as a precursor to most soft soaps, liquid soaps, and many potassium-containing chemicals. It is a white solid with hazardous corrosive properties. Most commercial samples have a purity of 90%, with the rest being water and carbonate.Agrochemicals And Fertilizers: Macroelement Fertilizer

PRODUCT APPLICATION

Potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide can be interchangeably used in many applications, although sodium hydroxide is preferred in industry due to its lower cost.
1 Precursor for other potassium compounds
Many potassium salts are prepared by neutralization reactions with potassium hydroxide. Potassium salts of carbonates, cyanides, permanganates, phosphates, and various silicates are prepared by reacting them with potassium hydroxide and an oxide or acid. Potassium phosphate has high solubility in fertilizers.
2 Manufacture of soft soaps
Potassium hydroxide is used to saponify fats in the production of corresponding "potassium soaps," which are softer than the more common soaps derived from sodium hydroxide. Due to their softness and higher solubility, potassium soaps require less water for liquefaction, allowing them to contain more Surfactants than liquefied sodium soaps.
3 Electrolyte applications
Potassium carbonate formed by the hydroxide solution leakage of alkaline batteries.
Aqueous solutions of potassium hydroxide are used as electrolytes in alkaline batteries based on nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, and manganese dioxide-zinc. Potassium hydroxide is preferred over sodium hydroxide due to its better solution conductivity. Potassium hydroxide electrolyte is also used in nickel-iron batteries.
4 Food industry
In the food industry, potassium hydroxide serves as a food thickening agent, pH regulator, and food stabilizer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers it generally safe as a direct human food ingredient when used in conjunction with "good manufacturing practices."
5 Special applications
Like sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide attracts many special applications, almost all of which rely on its properties as a strong chemical base and the accompanying ability to degrade many materials. For example, potassium hydroxide accelerates the decomposition of soft tissues in animals and humans in a process commonly referred to as "chemical cremation" or "alkaline hydrolysis," leaving only bones and other hard tissues. Entomologists use a 10% solution of potassium hydroxide to facilitate the study of fine anatomical structures in insect dissections.
In chemical synthesis, the choice between potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide depends on the solubility or quality of the resulting salt.
The corrosive nature of potassium hydroxide makes it a useful ingredient in reagents and formulations for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, and it can resist the corrosion caused by potassium hydroxide itself.
Potassium hydroxide is also used in semiconductor chip manufacturing.
Potassium hydroxide is typically the primary active ingredient in chemical "cuticle removers" used for manicures.
Because caustic alkalis like potassium hydroxide can break down the cuticle of hair, it is used to remove hair from animal hides. Leather is soaked in a solution of potassium hydroxide and water for several hours to prepare it for the depilation stage of the tanning process. The same principle is used to soften human hair in preparation for shaving. Pre-wetted products and some shaving creams contain potassium hydroxide to force open the cuticle of the hair and act as a humectant, attracting and forcing water into the scale-like cuticle, further damaging the hair. In this weakened state, the hair is more easily cut by razor blades.
Potassium hydroxide is used to identify certain species of fungi. A 3-5% aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide is applied to the flesh of mushrooms, and researchers observe whether the color of the flesh changes. Certain types of mushrooms, boletes, polypores, and lichens can be identified based on these color reaction changes
