Polyphosphoric Acid is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Hn+2PnO3n+1. It is a colorless, transparent, viscous liquid that is corrosive and classified as a Class 2 inorganic acid corrosive substance. Polyphosphoric acid is a protonic acid and can dissolve various low-molecular-weight and high-molecular-weight organic compounds.
PRODUCT APPLICATION
Polyphosphoric acid (PPA) is used as a cyclodehydration aid for organic synthesis.
◆ Single-step dehydration instead of a two-step inverse Friedel-Crafts synthesis (formation of the acid chloride, followed by condensation), can improve target molecule yield with no need for halogens.
◆ In many cases, replacing a sulfuric/Phosphoric Acid dehydration reaction medium with PPA will result in higher yields.
◆ Seven-membered ring compounds can be assembled with a reduced risk of ester cleavage or incorporating molecules of the dehydration medium into the product.
◆ Self-condensation (dimerization) is less likely than with stronger dehydration materials.
◆ Low vapor pressure and low toxicity of PPA reduce reaction hazards, leading to reduced industrialization time and lower manufacturing cost.

In organic synthesis, polyphosphoric acid is used as a dehydrating agent, cyclizing agent, and acylating agent. It serves as a catalyst or solvent for condensation, cyclization, rearrangement, substitution, and other reactions. Sometimes, polyphosphate esters (PPE) are used to increase the solubility of polyphosphoric acid in organic solvents. Additionally, polyphosphoric acid is also used as a substitute for orthophosphoric acid and as an analytical reagent.
