 Magnesium sulfate, with the molecular formula MgSO4, is a compound containing magnesium. It is a commonly used chemical reagent and drying agent, and is a colorless or white crystal or powder with no odor, a bitter taste, and hygroscopicity. In clinical applications, magnesium sulfate is used for treating conditions such as diarrhea, cholecystitis, anti-convulsions, eclampsia, tetanus, and hypertension. It can also be used in the production of leather, explosives, paper, ceramics, and fertilizers.

Food
Used as a food fortifier. In China, it is allowed to be used in dairy products at a usage level of 3-7g/kg; in beverages and milk drinks at a usage level of 1.4-2.8g/kg; and in mineral drinks with a maximum usage level of 0.05g/kg.
Industrial Use
It is often used in combination with calcium salts for the water used in yeast production. Adding 4.4g/100L of water can increase the hardness by 1 degree. However, excessive usage can result in bitterness and the production of hydrogen sulfide odor.
It is used in leather making, explosives, paper making, ceramics, fertilizers, and as an oral laxative in medicine, as well as a mineral water additive.
Agriculture
Magnesium sulfate is used as a fertilizer in agriculture because magnesium is one of the main components of chlorophyll. It is commonly used for potted plants or crops that are deficient in magnesium, such as tomatoes, potatoes, roses, etc. The advantage of magnesium sulfate over other fertilizers is its high solubility. Magnesium sulfate is also used as a bath salt.
